Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center at UVA

University of Virginia Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center presents: (Re)presentAs a feminist call to action, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of full co-education at University of Virginia and in response to the national racial reckonings of 2020 and of the 2017 Unite the Right Rally (#Charlottesville), the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center of the University of Virginia launched (re)present, an arts and writing competition aimed at reimagining, revising, and (re)presenting “the” stereotypical (white, male, heteronormative) UVA student. While the competition was open to the entire University community, students in particular submitted award-winning writing and art that interrogated, subverted, and reclaimed the image of the UVA student, reflecting the richly diverse community they claim as their own. The Women’s Center created a physical and virtual gallery of award-winning work,  the former visible to all passing by the Women’s Center (during a time of lockdown when indoor viewing was not possible), and the latter still proudly accessible online. When the Women’s Center issued the call to action, the community responded enthusiastically, submitting work, serving on juries to judge the submissions, and voting in the Students’ Choice Awards.

Below are representative submissions from each of the four categories (Film, 2D, 3D, and writing).
